 Good Sports is a free program and was designed to help community sports clubs change their culture to become more focused on young people and families by providing leadership and support to build viable and friendly environments in which –

  • alcohol is managed responsibly;
  • healthy eating is promoted;
  • physical participation is encouraged; and,
  • ‘on-site’ smoking is restricted as required by law.

GOOD SPORTS NSW

Good Sports state wide implementation was one of the top 10 recommendations of the 2003 NSW Alcohol Summit after community sport clubs were found as a leading incident factor for unlicensed alcohol sales, binge drinking, drink driving and under-age drinking. Full scale roll out in NSW is yet to take place and is pending State Government funding.

Despite the lack of funding, the Australian Drug Foundation is continuing on from the NSW South Coast Pilot Program (2002–2004), and undertaking significant work in developing the most appropriate model for full scale implementation in NSW.

To seek a true cross section of NSW communities pilot projects are currently taking place within 12 LGAs across the mid-north coast (2 LGAs), south coast (6 LGAs), south west (2 LGAs) and Sydney (2 LGAs).

As at September 1 2008, the number of clubs currently in the various stages of the program in New South Wales are indicated in the table below:
