2. What is a ‘community sports club'?
A club must satisfy all of the following seven criteria of a community sports club to be included in the program.
- a) The Club comes from a sport on the Good Sports approved list (see above)
-
b) The Club has a committee of management that is generally run by volunteers
-
c) Committee of management knows and has regular direct access and ability to influence individual members within the club
-
d) Anyone (regardless of ability) is able to become a member and participate (not elite)
-
e) The Club provides the opportunity for members to participate in sporting competition against other clubs
-
f) Generally has some membership fee to join
-
g) Is not for profit, with all funds going back into the club (not a commercial operation)
3. Exceptions from the ‘traditional' community sports club model.
Three exceptions are permitted.
- a) Local sports associations / leagues that operate their sporting competition from a central facility. These associations/leagues are for competitions whereby teams compete against one another as opposed to clubs.
- b) Sports clubs (that are an amalgamation of a number of community sports clubs sharing one facility)
- c) Umpires Associations
These exceptions must meet all the following criteria:
-
Be on the list of approved sports (see point 1)
-
Have a committee of management
-
Have members (clubs or individuals)
-
Anyone (regardless of ability) is able to become a member and participate (not elite)
-
Provide the opportunity for members to participate in sporting competition against other clubs
-
Hold a liquor license
-
Be ‘not for profit'
Note: The following are an example of ‘clubs', venues, organisations, etc. that are ineligible to register in the program:
- Any commercial club or centre
- Sports centres or venues
- Community / Recreation / Leisure / Fitness centres
- Registered clubs (eg. Leagues / RSL clubs)
- State Sporting Associations
- ‘Ethnic' clubs (that are not sports based)
- Scouts and Guides
- Rotary
Clubs operating inside a hotel (eg. darts, billiards and snooker, etc.) are also not permitted to join. Clubs operating inside a commercial venue (eg. ten-pin bowling, go-karting, etc.), may join, but must not display their merchandise at the centre.
