The Good Sports Program and Broadmeadows Basketball Association

The Broadmeadows Basketball Association holds the firm belief that drugs, alcohol and smoking should not be associated with sport. Through their involvement with the Good Sports accreditation program the club hoped to become leaders in their community in addressing alcohol issues. Alcohol has never been regularly consumed at the club or during club activities; however the association is licensed to serve alcohol and wished to do so as responsibly as possible.

The club has never promoted cheap drinks, held drinking competitions, or used alcohol for prizes or payment, and it does not rely on the sale of alcohol for revenue. Good Sports was seen as a means to become involved with an authority which maintains similar views on alcohol management, and gain recognition for their existing alcohol policy both within the club and within the community. Members, players and supporters have encouraged the initiative.

The club reports that the publicity surrounding the club's involvement with the Good Sports accreditation program has been helpful in educating members, reiterating and supporting the existing policy, and promoting the club as a responsible and health-oriented association.
